How Does A Heat Pump Work

In simple terms, heat pumps work by moving the heat in the air from one place to another. Heat pumps function as energy-efficient heating and cooling methods by directing heat where needed. During the winter, heat from the outside air is moved inside. During the summer, hot air from inside is collected and moved outdoors while cooled conditioned air is blown back inside. A typical heat pump system has two components, an indoor and outdoor, that work in unison to maintain the temperature of your home.

Heat pumps are incredibly energy efficient because rather than heating the air itself, they take the heat that’s already in the air, concentrate it through a pressurized refrigerant system and deliver it to whatever environment you want to control the temperature in.

Heat Pump vs Furnace

Most homes in the United States are heated with some type of furnace system, typically natural gas. In these systems, the air is drawn into a heat exchanger where it’s circulated over a heated furnace before being distributed throughout the home. While effective, this method of heating is energy-intensive and generally requires the direct use of fossil fuels, such as gas, for a heat source. This creates inherent risks such as fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Heat pumps on the other hand are powered entirely with electricity, have no risk of exploding and can reduce energy consumption by up to 50%. They’re not only good for the environment, but this increase in efficiency will have a direct impact on your savings.

Here at Complete Comfort Air Conditioning & Heating, saving you money is almost as important to us as it is to you!

Benefits Over Traditional Sources of Heat

If you’re thinking of investing in a heat pump for your home, you may like to know how it could directly benefit your home. Here are some of the advantages of a heat pump for your heating and cooling system:

  • Increases energy efficiency
  • Reduces costs
  • Saves space
  • Reduces your carbon footprint

Downsides Of Heat Pumps

While heat pumps do offer several clear benefits in terms of energy and savings, there are several downsides to this method of home climate control. Heat pumps tend to be more expensive to install and have a higher upfront cost. This could be made up for in savings down the road, but it’s something to be considered.

Heat pumps are also not ideal for all homes or environments. While heat pumps can draw heat from cold air, in exceptionally cold environments, heat pumps need an auxiliary heat source to add heat to the air coming into the pump’s intake. This greatly reduces how efficient they are and may negate the savings they would create somewhere warmer.

Here in Florida, heat pumps provide a cheap, energy-efficient method of heating and cooling your home.
