If you’re like most Americans, you probably just ignore your air conditioner- at least, until it breaks. Then, you just want it fixed- like, yesterday.
But taking the time to understand certain air conditioning terms before you fix your air conditioner can make all the difference in your long-term electricity bills. Knowing ( and using) these terms could also save you thousands of dollars next time you replace your unit.
SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
SEER is the measure of a system’s efficiency. The more efficient the system, the cheaper it is to operate. A higher efficient system is also better for the environment. The U.S. Department of Energy states that 14 is the minimum SEER rating for systems produced today.
As you might guess, higher- SEER models are also more expensive. The ideal balance for your home will depend on where you live and how often you use air conditioning.
SEER is like the fuel mileage you get in your car. The higher the SEER rating the more miles per gallon.
Modulation
Modulation, or variable speed, air conditioners are less expensive to run. Basically, they vary the amount of energy used to power the air conditioner. So instead of feeling like your house is freezing when the air conditioning is on, and feeling too warm when it kicks off, you’ll get an even temperature.
Modulated systems also help control humidity, which is one of the main factors in how hot you feel. When humidity is better controlled, you may get away with setting the A/C at a higher temperature. Because of this, Modulated system could save you even more money on your energy bill.
Humidity
Indoor Humidity can make you feel warmer, even if you’re constantly running the air conditioner. Choosing a system with humidity control will make your home more comfortable and save you money. A properly sized system with humidity control will allow you to zone in on your comfort level giving you peak performance out of your HVAC system.
Repair, don’t replace
What if your existing air conditioner is relatively new? Can you make it more efficient? Yes!
“Up to a third of systems installed today are running well below their rate of performance because of duct leakage, improper duct sizing, improper charging, and other maintenance issues,” Ensuring your system is running right can sometimes be more beneficial than investing in an air conditioner with a higher SEER.
